Wilda E. Brown Memorial Scholarship

Wilda E. Brown Memorial Scholarship

Wilda E. Brown was born in 1905 in Climax, MI as one of 9 children. She graduated high school in 1923, and then attended Kalamazoo College, where she received her teaching certificate. While at Kalamazoo College, Wilda married Lawrence Brown. Together they raised a son and a daughter.

With her teaching certificate, Wilda taught 8 grades with 12 students in a one-room school near Climax. An accomplished pianist, she also taught piano for 75 years.

Throughout Wilda’s life she was an active member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. She loved to travel all of the U.S. and had a passion for photographing churches. Her artistic visualization was one of the reasons that she was an avid flower gardener.

Impact

The essence of how Wilda was best put by her son, Robert. “My mom was truly a special woman. She would teach piano to students in their own homes if they could not come to see her. She loved music and she adored children. We hope this scholarship will help a student who has the same passion.”
