She had three siblings, brother Addison George Sigsworth and sisters Maude Bell-Meyers and Gwendolyn Mac Sigsworth-Hatch. At eight years of age, Hazel and her family moved to Albion.

After graduating from Albion High School, Hazel moved to New York, attended Nursing School and became a Registered Nurse. She met and married the love of her life, Dr. Abraham Sidney Lewis. He had two children, Joan and Martin Lewis.

Hazel had a successful career as a nurse. She worked in New York as a nurse with her husband, until his death. She then worked as a nurse for AT&T in Atlanta, Georgia, finishing her career in Cleveland, Ohio. She then moved to Albion to serve as a caregiver for her mother, her sister, Maude and brother, Addison, until they passed away.

Known as a kind, considerate, generous and strong person, Hazel bequeathed a portion of her estate in the Kellogg Community College Foundation with the direction that it be added to its scholarship fund and used exclusively for scholarships for students in the KCC nursing program.
