Ethel Denton Groos Memorial Gold Key Scholarship

Ethel Denton Groos Memorial Gold Key Scholarship

Ethel Denton Groos was born in New York. She attended Cornell University – one of the few institutions at the time that offered fine arts courses with a full liberal arts curriculum – where she met Richard Groos. They moved to Hastings, Michigan in the late 1950’s, and Ethel began focusing much of her time on painting. Her favorite medium was oil painting and she loved to work with the figure, in portraiture and on big canvases. Later in her artistic endeavors, she explored bronze sculpture and created three pieces dedicated to her sons.

Ethel was a long time Kalamazoo Institute of Arts member, student and supporter. After her passing, one of their galleries was named after her. Ethel passed in 1999 after a battle with cancer.

Impact

Following Ethel’s passing, her husband, Richard Groos, established this scholarship in her memory to support a student of Branch County.
