Alta Greene Nursing Scholarship
Alta Greene attended the Leila School of Nursing in Battle Creek. While there, she was chosen to serve as the private duty nurse for Mrs. Leila Post Montgomery, who had been admitted to the hospital for a broken bone. She was a surgical nurse for Dr. Richard Stiefel for many years, and later as the office nurse for Dr. Stiefel and Dr. Giardot, surgeons in Battle Creek.
Greene really enjoyed being a surgical nurse. She was very detailed and professional, and always wore the traditional white nurse’s uniform and cap. She was a perfectionist in the operating room, wanting to do her best to benefit the doctors and their patients. Mrs. Greene was employed by the same doctor for 54 years!
Impact
This scholarship was established in the name of Alta Greene by JoAnn Shumway. Mrs. Greene enjoyed nursing so much, attended nursing school in Battle Creek, and lived in Battle Creek; therefore, she thought the scholarship should be given to help a nursing student in Battle Creek.
